1. Uses of be (present simple) We use 'be' to say: - our name - our country / nationality - our age - our job / role - our location Name: I'm Nadia. Country: I'm from Argentina. Age: I'm seven. 2. Subject + be Be changes depending on the subject. I + am (I'm) You + are (You're) We must use 'be' with a subject pronoun. We cannot say Am from Canada. → must say I'm from Canada. 3. Positive sentences (+) Structure: Subject + be + phrase I'm Lena. I'm nine. You're a student. You're from the UK. 4. Contractions (short forms) We use ' to show a missing letter. I am → I'm You are → You're 5. Negative sentences (-) Structure: Subject + be + not (or contracted negative) I+ am not (I'm not) You + are not (You're not / You aren't) I'm not John. I'm not in Paris. You aren't from Spain. You aren't American. You're not American. 6. Yes/No questions To make a question: Be + subject + phrase You are a student. → Are you a student? I am in class A1. → Am I in class A1? Are you OK? 7. Short answers Structure: Yes/No + subject + be Yes, I am. No, I'm not. Yes, you are. No, you aren't. No, you're not.
