We use there is and there are to say that something exists.

Positive sentences

Use there is for one thing:

  1. There is a cat.
  2. There is a book on the table.

Use there are for more than one thing:

  1. There are two cats.
  2. There are three books on the table.

Negative sentences

Use there is not (there isn’t) for one thing:

  1. There isn’t a dog.
  2. There isn’t a chair in the room.

Use there are not (there aren’t) for more than one thing:

  1. There aren’t any apples.
  2. There aren’t any people here.

We often use any in negative sentences:

  1. There aren’t any shops.

Questions

Use is there for one thing:

  1. Is there a toilet?
  2. Is there a supermarket near here?

Short answers:

  1. Yes, there is.
  2. No, there isn’t.

Use are there for more than one thing:

  1. Are there any buses?
  2. Are there two parks?

Short answers:
