Study this grammar rule:

1. Overview: The definite article "the" is used to talk about specific things. It helps us understand that we are talking about something known or unique. We use "the" when we know which thing we mean, or when there is only one of something. 2. Cases of Usage: Case 1: Unique or Known Things We use "the" for things that are unique or already known to the listener. Example: The sun is bright today. Case 2: Previously Mentioned Things We use "the" for things we have already talked about. Example: I saw a dog. The dog was very friendly. Case 3: Only One Exists We use "the" when there is only one of something. Example: The president is speaking today. Case 4: Geographical Objects We use "the" with names of rivers, oceans, and other geographical objects. Example: The Pacific Ocean is very large. 3. Exceptions or Things to Pay Attention To: Not all geographical names use "the." For example, we say "Mount Everest" and "Lake Michigan" without "the." Example: I want to climb Mount Everest. Also, we do not use "the" with plural nouns when we talk about them in general. Example: Cats are cute. (No "the" because we talk about all cats.) 4. Additional Notes: A common mistake is using "the" with general nouns, like "I like the apples" instead of "I like apples." Remember, "the" is for specific things, not general ones.
