Read the rules.

We use past time expressions with the Past Simple to say when something happened in the past.

  1. ago = before now. Put it after a period of time: two days ago, a year ago.
  2. last = the previous period: last night, last week, last year. Don’t use the before last.
  3. yesterday = the day before today: yesterday, yesterday morning, yesterday evening.
  4. in + year = something happened in a specific past year: in 1999, in 2015.
