Affirmative

Use was and were to talk about the past with the verb be.

I / he / she / it + was

I was tired.

She was at school.

you / we / they + were

You were late.

They were happy.

Negative

Add not after was or were.

was + not → wasn’t

were + not → weren’t

I wasn’t tired.

He wasn’t at home.

We weren’t late.

They weren’t hungry.

Questions

Put was or were before the subject.

Was + I / he / she / it ... ?

Was she at school?

Were + you / we / they ... ?

Were they tired?

Short answers

Yes, I/he/she/it was.

No, I/he/she/it wasn’t.

Yes, you/we/they were.

No, you/we/they weren’t.
