In English, there are two types of questions: direct questions and indirect questions.
Direct Questions: These are questions that ask for information directly. They usually start with a question word (like who, what, where, when, why, or how) or an auxiliary verb (like is, are, do, or can). The word order is usually subject-verb.
Examples:
- What is your name?
- Can you help me?
Indirect Questions: These are questions that are embedded within a statement or another question. They do not follow the same word order as direct questions. The structure usually includes a phrase that introduces the question, such as "I wonder," "Could you tell me," or "Do you know." In indirect questions, the word order changes to subject-verb.
Examples:
- I wonder what your name is.
- Could you tell me if you can help me?
