Kind Words: Giving Support in English

This A2–B1 ESL lesson teaches students how to offer emotional support using kind and caring phrases in English. Learners begin by reading a short dialogue in which one friend comforts another, identifying useful expressions such as “I’m sorry to hear that,” “What a shame,” and “I’m here for you.” Next, they match phrases to their meanings, practice word order to form natural sentences, and rehearse pronunciation to convey a supportive tone. In guided speaking activities, students role-play real-life situations — such as consoling a friend after receiving bad news — and create their own responses using the target language. This lesson helps learners build confidence in expressing empathy, responding politely, and showing care in everyday conversations.
